Lincicome shoots 1 under par but misses cut in PGA tourney

-

Brittany Lincicome missed the cut at the Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky, after shooting a 1-under-par 71, failing in her bid to become the first female golfer since 1945 to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.

The eight-time LPGA Tour winner with two major titles was the first woman since Michelle Wie in 2008 to play in a PGA Tour event. Lincicome, who finished at 5-over 149, had sought to join Babe Zaharias (1945) as the lone women to make the cut.

Robert Streb, Hunter Mahan, Tom Lovelady and Troy Merritt shared the lead at 18 under after a day in which much of the field had to complete the rain-delayed second round before starting the third.

■ At Moscow, 31-year-old Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (15-0, 11 knockouts) unified the cruiserweight division by beating Murat Gassiev (26-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous decision, adding the 24-year-old Russian’s IBF and WBA titles to his own WBC and WBO belts.

■ At Mende, France, Sky teammates Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome remained 1-2 in the Tour de France after the hilly 14th stage, won by Spanish rider Omar Fraile by more than 18 minutes over the top four riders in the standings.

■ Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba, 23, who had 14 goals, 36 assists and a plus-15 rating last season, agreed to a five-year, $30 million extension.
