LINNEA MILLER DOMZ

-

Linnea Miller Domz, 105, passed away July 18, 2018. Born Linnea Johnson, May 5, 1913, she was one of six children. Raised in Mason, Wisc., she had lots of fun stories about growing up. She went to nurse’s training in Ashland General Hospital where she earned her R.N. She answered a newspaper ad for a nurse in California. Within nine days she moved to California and began work at the California Lutheran Hospital. There she met a patient by the name of Abe Miller. Of course, she charmed him. They married and moved to Las Vegas. They had two daughters and a son. Linnea always loved flowers and gardening. Once she decided to enter a flower show. She took a pretty little tea cup and put some wild flowers from her yard in the cup and she won an Honorable Mention. That is how it all began. She went on to win the sweepstakes many times.

She and Abe bought a cabin in Oak Creek, Ariz. While visiting some friends there, she saw a magazine on the coffee table, The National Gardener. She read it cover-to-cover and she asked her friend, Mrs. Peterson, what this was all about. Why didn’t Nevada have access to this magazine? Mrs. Peterson told her it was because Nevada wasn’t federated. Linnea realized that Nevada was missing out and worked to federate the garden clubs of Nevada in 1963, and became the first Nevada State President. While visiting in Arizona she noticed that there was a study course being held in Tucson. Gutsy as she was, Linnea went to take the course and she passed. She went on to become an instructor for nearly 20 years. She has instructed in Japan, Guatemala, Peru and twenty states. She is still requested as an instructor. She has been featured in the Vision of Beauty and was given the National Best Designer award in 1982 and featured on the cover of the Vision of Beauty three times. She served on the National Board for over 27 years. Currently, she is a member of three garden clubs and has served in nearly all capacities for the Garden Clubs of Nevada, Inc. She and her husband were instrumental in having the Nevada Garden Club Center built in Lorenzi Park. She was instrumental in the construction of the Touch and Smell Garden for the blind. She is the Chairman of the LinneAbe Endowment Fund. She has made possible a library at the Garden Club Center for design books. After the death of her husband, Abe Miller, she married Dr. Casey Domz. Since his death she has made her home in Las Vegas. She is beloved by her family and friends for her intelligence, sense of humor generosity to the many members of Nevada Garden Clubs, and the State of Nevada. Private services will be held in Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Garden Clubs of Nevada, Inc.
