Giants catcher Posey to have season-ending surgery on hip
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey will undergo hip surgery Monday in Vail, Colorado, ending what has been a painful and frustrating year for the six-time All-Star.
Posey, 31, entered Saturday hitting .284 this season but had only 41 RBIs and five home runs, his fewest since 2011. A Gold Glove recipient in 2016, Posey has thrown out only 17 of 59 base stealers this season for a career-worst 29 percent. He is expected to be sidelined six to eight months.
■ Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (bone spurs in both heels) is not expected to return this season, manager John Gibbons said. Toronto is on the hook for another $34 million on the 33-year-old Tulowitzki’s contract over the next two seasons. Also, right-hander Aaron Sanchez (right middle finger strain) was activated from the disabled list, and left-hander Jaime Garcia was designated for assignment.
■ Catcher Gary Sanchez (right groin strain), out since July 24, went 0-for-3 with a walk Saturday for the Gulf Coast League Yankees. He is expected to join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre early this week to continue his rehabilitation assignment.
■ Third baseman Kris Bryant (inflamed left shoulder), out since July 24, took live batting practice Saturday at Wrigley Field and hit a ball of the scoreboard in center field. The Bonanza High product will begin a rehabilitation assignment Monday with Triple-A Iowa.
■ Right-hander Nick Kingham, a Sierra Vista product, was recalled from Indianapolis, and right-handed reliever Clay Holmes was optioned to the Triple-A club.
