Democracy Prep strikes early, turns to defense to hold on
Democracy Prep managed only 71 yards of offense on Saturday night.
It didn’t matter.
Keionte Scott returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, and the Blue Knights held off Del Sol 9-7 at Rancho.
Keith Jones added a 32-yard field goal with 3:20 to go in the first quarter to give Democracy Prep (25, 1-1 Sunset League) a 9-0 lead.
Del Sol quarterback Andre Nevarez scored on a 1-yard run with 5:46 to go in the third quarter, but the Dragons wouldn’t score again.
Nevarez completed 11 of 22 passes for 145 yards, but was intercepted twice.
Trey Alexander rushed for 84 yards for the Dragons (4-3, 1-1).
■ The Meadows 58, Mountain
View 0 — At Mountain View, Peter Hoskins accounted for three touchdowns as the Mustangs (2-3, 1-0 2A Southern League) routed the Saints (0-3, 0-1).
Hoskins rushed for two scores as part of a 30-point first quarter, then scored on a 61-yard punt return in the third quarter.
Hoskins’ 15-yard TD run in the first quarter was followed quickly by a 45-yard touchdown pass from Michael Corrigan to Davidson Rufty. A few plays later, the Mustangs were in the end zone again, after recovering a Saints rumble at the 5-yard line. Corrigan hit Matthew Aaron for a 3-yard TD with 2:20 to go in the first quarter.
Hoskins added a 5-yard TD run after the next defensive stand, which was set up by his own punt return down to the Saints 7.
Julian Lara had a pair of TD runs, and Corrigan added a 7-yard touchdown pass to Trey Covell for The Meadows.
■ Spring Mountain 72, Trona (California) 36 — At Spring Mountain, Da’Juan Brown had a hand in five touchdowns as the Golden Eagles (3-1) rolled past the Tornadoes.
Brown rushed for 116 yards and three scores on just four carries. He had TD runs of 52, 15 and 36 yards. He also completed 2 of 3 passes for 56 yards and two TDs. He had a 42yard scoring pass to Malik Powell, and a 14-yard TD toss to Ear’Zaybione Brown.
Powell also had a TD run, as did Azarias Roberson, Kadreion Payne and Chris Mosely.
Spring Mountain has outscored its last three opponents 217-0 following a 48-40 loss to Bloomington Christian (California) to open the season.
