Torres-Cortez’s profile on summer crime for The Sunday was picked as the best news feature for urban weeklies. He also won first place in the same class for community service, a story he wrote with colleague April Corbin on the value of hiring veterans.

“Not only were these stories well written, but they were well crafted,” a judge said of Torres-Cortez. “I didn’t feel like I had read pieces about evolving senseless gang violence or a mass shooting — but rather was taken on an emotional experience. This work is exceptiona­l in every way.”
