UNLV volleyball team deals loss to Wolf Pack in four sets

Mariena Hayden had 19 kills and 10 digs, and the UNLV volleyball team defeated UNR 25-16, 24-26, 25-13, 25-23 at Cox Pavilion.

Erin Davis added 13 kills, and Antonette Rolda had 47 assists for the Rebels (13-5, 4-2 Mountain West).

Kayla Afoa, Jamila Minor and Shiloh Peleras had 10 kills each for the Wolf Pack (8-9, 1-5).

■ Las Vegas native Jessie Vargas and Thomas Dulorme fought to a majority 12-round draw in a battle for the vacant WBC silver welterweig­ht title at Chicago.

Both fighters scored knockdowns, Vargas (28-2-2, 10 knockouts) in the 10th and Dulorme (24-3-1, 16 KOs) in the final seconds of the fight. The scores were 115-111 for Vargas and two scores of 113-113. Some in the crowd booed the decision.

■ Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (47-4-1, 41 knockouts) successful­ly defended his WBC super flyweight belt by beating Mexico’s Iran Diaz (14-3-3, six KOs) via unanimous decision in front of home fans in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Srisaket won by scores of 119-109, 120-108 and 119-109 in his first home title fight and third defense since taking the belt from Roman Gonzalez last year.

■ Third-seeded Kei Nishikori beat Richard Gasquet 7-6 (2), 6-1 to reach the final of the Japan Open in Tokyo.

Nishikori, who has not won an ATP World Tour title since Memphis in 2016, will face Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final.

Medvedev became the first qualifier to make the final in Tokyo in 16 years by beating Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-3.

■ Anastasija Sevastova beat U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals of the China Open in Beijing.

In the final, she will face No. 2 seed Carolina Wozniacki, who defeated Wang Qiang 6-1, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
