1978

Oct. 19, 1978: Jerald Burgess sexually assaults a 29-year-old mother he met the previous day at Albert Einstein Hebrew Day School.

Oct. 25, 1978

Cary Sayegh is taken from the playground of the Hebrew day school. Hours later, a ransom call comes in. A woman who answered the phone identifies Burgess as the caller.

1979

Jan. 31, 1979: Burgess’ federal trial begins in a scheme that defrauded an elderly couple of $200,000. March 14, 1979:

Burgess is sentenced to 15 years in prison after conviction­s for income tax evasion and interstate transporta­tion of money.

1980

Jan. 18, 1980: Burgess is found guilty in Clark County District Court of two counts of sexual assault and one count of open or gross lewdness. He is later sentenced to 15 years.

1981

March 5, 1981: Burgess is indicted in District Court on charges of first-degree kidnapping and obtaining money under false pretenses. May 8, 1981: Burgess is extradited to Las Vegas from a federal prison in Pennsylvan­ia.

May 14, 1981: Burgess pleads not guilty to the kidnapping charges.

1982

Jan. 18, 1982: Testimony begins in the kidnapping trial. Feb. 5, 1982: Jury deliberati­on begins.

Feb. 9, 1982: Burgess is found not guilty of all charges in Cary’s kidnapping.

1983

December 1983: Burgess is paroled in his federal case and enters the Nevada prison system to serve out the remainder of his 15year sentence in the sexual assault case.

1989

October 1989: Burgess is freed from prison and stays in Las Vegas.

1999

April 1999: The investigat­ion into Cary’s kidnapping is reopened in hopes of finding his body.

2000

June 2000: Burgess sells a .22-caliber handgun with a silencer and some ammunition to an undercover agent during the investigat­ion.

Oct. 12, 2000: The FBI arrests Burgess on federal gun charges.

2002

Feb. 8, 2002: Burgess is sentenced to about 11 years in prison on the gun charges.

2010

Aug. 20, 2010: Burgess is released from prison.

Today, 2018

The 40-year-old kidnapping case remains open. Authoritie­s say they won’t close it until they find Cary’s body.
