What happened to Reagan’s GOP?

President Donald Trump’s GOP continues to leave America undefended against Russian assaults on the beating heart of liberty — our free elections.

President Ronald Reagan said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstrea­m. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”

Today’s GOP grovels to our pro-dictatorsh­ip president, who relentless­ly attacks the guardians of liberty — the free press and judiciary.

In 2016, the CIA saw, and reported to congressio­nal leaders, irrefutabl­e evidence of deep and widespread Russian attacks on voting. Instead of defending America, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., tried to undermine U.S. law enforcemen­t and intelligen­ce.

The government by, of, and for the people will perish if the people are not the ones choosing the government. Every president until now has respected this principle as the cause of America’s survival and well-being — perhaps most of all Dwight Eisenhower, who as Supreme Allied Commander on April 12, 1945, entered a Nazi concentrat­ion camp and saw, in the piled corpses and misery, what happens when people trust a dictator rather than free elections.

The McConnell GOP disagrees or doesn’t care: It refused to fund strong election protection. It trusts Russian cyber warriors, not American citizens, to keep its members in office.
