Maple Leafs rally to defeat Jets
Toronto prevails despite losing star center Matthews
TORONTO — Jake Gardiner and Kasperi Kapanen scored in a late 26-second span and the Toronto Maple Leafs overcame the loss of star center Auston Matthews to beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Saturday.
Matthews left in the second period after injuring his left shoulder absorbing a hit from defenseman Jacob Trouba.

At Calgary, Alberta, Nicklas Backstrom scored the winner in a shootout and goaltender Pheonix Copley earned his first career victory as Washington beat Calgary.

At Nashville, Tenn., Leon Draisaitl and Drake Caggiuila each scored twice and Edmonton ended a 13-game losing streak against Nashville.

At Columbus, Ohio, Artemi Panarin scored 31 seconds into overtime to help Columbus win its second straight. Buffalo saw its three-game winning streak snapped.

At Vancouver, British Columbia, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each scored two goals and Pittsburgh won its fourth straight game.

At St. Paul, Minn., Eric Staal put Minnesota ahead on the power play with 9:44 remaining and Jonas Brodin had a late empty-netter as the Wild won for the fifth straight game.
