Veteran slugger Encarnacion dealt to Yankees from Seattle

-

The New York Yankees agreed to acquire first baseman Edwin Encarnacion from Seattle for right-handed pitching prospect Juan Then.

Encarnacion, 36, is batting .241 with 21 home runs and 49 RBIs in 65 games this season, his 15th in the majors. The three-time All-Star is coming off five straight seasons of at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs.

Then, 19, has a 2.67 ERA over 24 starts in two seasons of rookie ball. The Mariners reportedly will pay approximately half of the $15 million left on Encarnacion’s contract.

Cody Allen, Los Angeles’ Opening Day closer, was designated for assignment, and fellow right-handed reliever Taylor Cole, a Bishop Gorman product, was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake. Allen, 30, signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal on Jan. 20 after posting a 2.98 ERA and 149 saves in seven seasons with Cleveland. He had a 6.06 ERA and four saves in 25 games with the Angels.

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks (inflamed right shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 29-year-old is 7-5 with a 3.36 ERA in 14 starts this season. Before allowing five runs in 4 1/3 innings Friday, Hendricks was 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his previous eight starts.

In what is expected to be his final minor league tuneup before joining Atlanta’s rotation, left-hander Dallas Keuchel allowed three runs on 11 hits and one walk and struck out four over seven innings for Double-A Mississippi in its 4-3 loss to Mobile.
