Lashley up by six strokes in Detroit
DETROIT — Nate Lashley shot a bogey-free, 9-under-par 63 on Saturday to open a six-stroke lead in the Rocket Mortgage Classic at 23-under 193. Lashley, 36, slipped into the Detroit Golf Club field as an alternate, and the 353rd-ranked player has put himself in position for his first PGA Tour win.
He tied for eighth in February in the Puerto Rico Open — played opposite the WGC-Mexico Championship — for his lone top-10 finish on tour.
Lashley, the first- and second-round leader, started Saturday with a one-shot lead and pulled away with the day’s low round.
J.T. Poston (66) was second. Cameron Tringale (65) was another stroke back.
■ At Rogers, Ark., Sung Hyun Park birdied the final two holes for an 8-under 63 to share the second-round lead in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship with Carlota Ciganda (66) at 13-under 129. Bishop Gorman product Inbee Park (69), the first-round leader, was tied for third at 11 under with Las Vegas resident Danielle Kang (63), top-ranked Hyo Joo Kim (64) and three others.
■ At South Bend, Ind., Steve Stricker opened a six-stroke lead in the U.S. Senior Open Championship, shooting 4-under 66 for a 54-hole tournament-record 18-under 192 while extending his bogey-free run to 48 holes. Fellow Madison, Wisconsin, product Jerry Kelly (70) was second and David Toms (70) third.
■ At Sotogrande, Spain, Christiaan Bezuidenhout of South Africa shot a 2-under 69 for a 10-under 203 total and a five-stroke lead in the Andalucia Valderrama Masters. Jon Rahm (67) and Hideto Tanihara (68) were tied for second.
