WILMA JEAN PUTNEY-SCROGGINS

-

Born Wilma Jean Walters to Morris and Virgie Walters in Huntington, WV, where she spent her childhood.

Jean joined the US Air Force in March 1954. While stationed at Francis E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY, she agreed to a blind date and met the love of her life, David Eugene Scroggins. They married in July 1954 and raised a family together, traveling wherever the Air Force sent them. Their adventures included a three-year tour in France, where they lived on the outskirts of Paris and spent vacations visiting different countries.

David retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service while stationed at Beale AFB in Northern California, and the Scroggins family settled in a beautiful home in Citrus Heights, near Sacramento. David sadly passed far too soon in February 1975.

A few years later, Jean met Denis Putney, affectionately known as Grampa Al. They lived in San Francisco during the 1989 earthquake, and eventually settled in Las Vegas, where they enjoyed spending time with friends and playing the occasional slot machine. He remained her life companion until his death in May 2006.

Jean passed away quietly in the comfort of her home surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her son, David Alan Scroggins (Michele), and daughter Cynthia Jean Collier (Steve). She leaves four grandsons, David and Michael Scroggins, Anthony Lane (Sherry), and Jonathan Simmons (Kristen), and great-grandchildren Cove, Ellie, Katie and Brooke Simmons. She is also survived by her sister, Bonnie Easthom (Ken), nephew and niece Brian Easthom and Sharon Easthom Rowsey, and numerous relatives from both the Scroggins and Walters sides of her family.

Jean will be laid to rest with full military honors and reunited with her husband David in the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org). Services will be held Monday, November 18, 2019, 2:00, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemtery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Dr., Boulder City, NV, 89005.
