Burton foils Gragson run, return by Junior

-

MIAMI — A late caution flag gave Harrison Burton new life, and he took advantage.

Burton took the inside line on the way to the lead in the final lap Saturday and held on to win the Hooters 250 at Homestead-Miami Speedway — denying, among others, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Las Vegan Noah Gragson, who seemed to be in command with seven laps left.

The Bishop Gorman product, Burton and Austin Cindric were three-wide going into that last lap, and Burton — the 19-year-old son of former Cup star Jeff Burton, won in a wild finish.

Cindric was second and Gragson third, two spots ahead of Earnhardt.

Burton became the youngest driver to win a NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Homestead. Cindric, a son of Team Penske president Tim Cindric, got his fifth top-five finish of the season but is looking for his first 2020 win.

Anthony Alfredo was fourth, his best finish in four Xfinity starts.

Gragson led by more than 10 seconds before a caution came out with about seven laps to go. But he couldn’t recapture that magic on the restart, and what would have been his third win of the season slipped away.

■ Trucks: At Miami, Kyle Busch won the Baptist Health 200, his 58th truck series victory and eighth in his past 10 starts. The Las Vegas native had been winless in his previous two outings, which by his standards constitutes a drought.

Busch was about five seconds clear of the field when the second stage ended at lap 60, part of a dominant night when he led 82 of 134 laps. Tyler Ankrum was second, and Ross Chastain, who won the first stage, held off Chase Elliott for third.
