Touted basketball center picks Howard over Kentucky, UCLA
Touted basketball center Makur Maker committed to Howard, picking the Washington, D.C.-based Bison over Kentucky, UCLA and Memphis. The 16th-ranked five-star prospect is the highest-rated player to commit to a Historically Black College or University since ESPN began tracking rankings in 2007. The 6-foot-11-inch, 235-pound Maker was born in Kenya and raised in Australia before his family moved to North America. He has played basketball in California and Ontario. Howard went 4-29 in 2019-20.
■ Football coach Mark Hudspeth resigned after one season, in which he led the Governors to a program-record 11 wins and an FCS quarterfinal. The 51-year-old reigning Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year said he needs to spend time with his wife and children and will return to coaching “at the right time.”
■ The university is reviewing whether to remove Doak Campbell’s name from the football stadium after former linebacker Kendrick Scott started a petition to do so because of the former school president’s pro-segregation views.
■ Tony Grimes of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the 2021 football class’ topranked cornerback, committed to the Tar Heels over Georgia, Ohio State and Texas A&M, giving UNC its second five-star commitment in the class.
■ Caleb Williams of Washington, D.C., ESPN’s top-ranked dual-threat quarterback and the No. 15 overall prospect in the 2021 football class, committed to the Sooners over Louisiana State and Maryland.
