Yankees closer Chapman tests positive; Astros cancel workout
New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman tested positive for COVID-19. The 32-year-old six-time All-Star “overall was doing well” despite experiencing mild symptoms, manager Aaron Boone said. No other personnel must isolate because of the positive test, Boone said.
■ The team canceled a workout after learning a staff member could have been exposed to a person outside the organization with COVID-19, the second time in the past week Houston nixed practice because of virus concerns.
■ Outfielder Delino DeShields Jr. took batting practice and ran the bases for the first time since being cleared after his COVID-19 diagnosis. The 27-year-old had mild symptoms, manager Terry Francona said.
■ Mike Ryan, the backup catcher on Boston’s 1967 league title team in a 35year professional career, died in his sleep Tuesday. He was 78. Ryan played 636 major league games over 11 seasons for three teams.
■ Four-time All-Star left-hander Cole Hamels, 36, who is returning from a sore left shoulder, couldn’t throw a scheduled side session because of triceps tendinitis, manager Brian Snitker said.
