IndyCar fans return as Dixon notches third straight victory

-

Scott Dixon took the lead after a caution flag and beat Will Power by 2.5386 seconds in the REV Group Grand Prix in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for his third straight IndyCar Series victory. The Road America race was the series’ first this season to allow spectators. Dixon is the fourth driver to open an IndyCar season with three straight wins, joining A.J. Foyt (seven in 1964), Sebastien Bourdais (four in 2006) and Al Unser (three in 1971).

■ At Indianapolis, Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) led qualifying for the E3 Spark Plugs Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway, the first event in more than four months.

■ At Spielberg, Austria, world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes extended his record with an 89th pole, besting runner-up Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 1.216 seconds in rain-drenched Styrian Grand Prix qualifying.

■ At Sparta, Ky., Sheldon Creed held off Kentucky native Ben Rhodes to win the Buckle Up in Your Truck 225 when a thunderstorm wiped out the final stage. The victory was Creed’s first in the series.
