Football workouts at Maryland halted after nine positive tests
Maryland suspended voluntary football workouts after nine individuals, not necessarily all football players, tested positive for COVID-19. Some 185 athletes and staff across several teams were tested Tuesday and Wednesday.
■ Kara Lawson, a Boston Celtics assistant and former WNBA All-Star, was hired as women’s basketball coach. The 39-year-old, who played 13 WNBA seasons, never has been a college head coach.
■ The athletic department is reducing its operating budget by 20 percent, eliminating 25 full-time positions and cutting coaches’ and administrators’ pay by up to 25 percent.
■ Tony Grimes, the nation’s top-rated cornerback and 247Sports’ No. 7 2021 football prospect, plans to reclassify and graduate this summer to join the Tar Heels for 2020.
■ Commissioner Larry Scott,
55, tested positive for COVID-19, is selfquarantining and continuing to work remotely.
