Thomas sent home for fiery argument at Ravens camp

-

Baltimore safety Earl Thomas was sent home Friday after a fiery on-field argument with teammate Chuck Clark, ESPN reported.

The incident was sparked by a missed assignment by Thomas, he confirmed in an Instagram post in which he shared video of the play.

Thomas and Clark yelled at each other on the sideline and had to be restrained by teammates and coaches, with Thomas putting up his fists at one point.

Thomas was not present at Saturday’s practice. Clark was practicing Saturday. When asked about disciplinary action for Thomas, a source said the situation is “fluid.”

This is the second time Thomas has had a confrontation with a teammate in two seasons with the Ravens. Last year, Thomas had a heated exchange with nose tackle Brandon Williams after a game against Cleveland.

Thomas, 31, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, signed a four-year, $55 million deal with Baltimore in March 2019. His nine-year run in Seattle ended with him extending a middle finger to Seahawks coach Pete Carroll while being carted off the field with a leg injury.

■ Seahawks: Defensive end Branden Jackson was “knocked out” and taken off the practice field on a backboard as a precaution after a helmet-to-helmet collision with offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, coach Pete Carroll said, noting Jackson had movement in all his extremities. The 27-year-old was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Also, guard/center Kyle Fuller was suspended for the regular season’s first two games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

■ NFL: The league hired Jonathan Beane as senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer. Beane, who has more than 20 years of experience as a diversity practitioner, begins his duties Sept. 8. He has held senior diversity roles at Roche, 21st Century Fox and Time Warner, among others. The role was established to help cultivate a more inclusive culture in the league.

■ Browns: Cornerback Kevin Johnson was released from the hospital Friday after sustaining a lacerated liver at practice last week and is “doing well,” coach Kevin Stefanski said, and the 28-year-old’s status will be evaluated on a “week-by-week” basis. Also, Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb returned to a limited practice after sustaining a concussion last week.

■ Packers: Wisconsin senior Ethan Bacon, a video editor for Badgers athletics, said he spent 600 hours during the COVID-19 quarantine creating a seven-part documentary on quarterback Aaron Rodgers entitled “Twelve.” The first part debuted Saturday on Bacon’s YouTube channel, EHBACON.

■ Washington: Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio will serve as interim coach if Ron Rivera misses time, ESPN reported. Rivera recently was diagnosed with a “very treatable and curable” form of skin cancer, the team said.

■ Cardinals: Free-agent cornerback B.W. Webb signed a one-year deal with undisclosed terms, joining his seventh team in seven NFL seasons. The 30-year-old started 12 games for Cincinnati in 2019.

■ Patriots: Quarterback Jarrett Stidham is limited at practice by an upper left leg injury. The 24-year-old had precautionary tests on the ailment Thursday at a hospital.

■ Lions: Fans will not be permitted at the team’s first two home games this season, and parking lots near the stadium and businesses within the indoor facility will be closed.

■ Bears: Veteran free-agent kicker Cairo Santos agreed to a contract with undisclosed terms that will become official if the 28-year-old clears COVID-19 testing Sunday.

■ Dolphins: Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick returned to practice after a one-day absence for personal reasons.

■ Eagles: Tight end Dallas Goedert (hairline thumb fracture) missed a fourth straight practice.
