LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A group of more than 100 protesters spent Saturday afternoon gathered outside of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s home after McConnell said he would push to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

McConnell, R-Ky., issued a statement late Friday saying he intends to hold a vote on whomever President Donald Trump nominates to succeed Ginsburg.

“Americans re-elected our majority in 2016 and expanded it in 2018 because we pledged to work with President Trump and support his agenda, particularly his outstanding appointments to the federal judiciary,” McConnell said. “Once again, we will keep our promise. President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.” Protesters lined the streets the next day in front of the senator’s home shortly after noon, chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, Mitch McConnell has got to go” and “vote him out” as several passing drivers honked and waved support.

Some also held signs featuring Breonna Taylor’s image, calling for justice in her death investigation.

One of the protesters, Sarah Landes, told a local TV station that she wanted to be a part of the protest to show her support for what Ginsburg has done, and how the Supreme Court justice made an impact on her own life.

“I made this sign this morning, very tearfully,” Landes said. “As a woman who’s a physician, Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy allowed me to actually become a doctor, achieve advanced levels of education, so I wanted to honor her today.”

Louisville police arrived on scene Saturday afternoon in an effort to get protesters to move out of the roadways to prevent blocking traffic.
