Virginia Tech goes overtime, stuns third-ranked Villanova

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Keve Aluma scored 22 points and Nahiem Alleyne 20 as Virginia Tech upset No. 3 Villanova 81-73 in overtime Saturday.

Tyrece Radford added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Hokies (2-0), who didn’t know they would be playing the nation’s third-ranked team until early Friday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Collin Gillespie scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half for Villanova (2-1). Caleb Daniels added 17 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl 14 for the Wildcats. The teams were tied at 29 after 20 minutes and deadlocked at 38 five minutes into the second half.

The Wildcats appeared to take control from there, going on an 11-0 run and holding the Hokies scoreless for five minutes.

But Virginia Tech went up 64-62 with 1.3 seconds left on a traditiona­l three-point play by Aluma, who scored on a beautiful assist from Cartier Diarra in the lane, and then unintentio­nally made the free throw.

■ No. 2 Baylor 112, Louisiana-Lafayette 82: At T-Mobile Arena, MaCio Teague scored 21 points for the Bears (1-0), who shot 56.3 percent while making 15 of 27 3-pointers. Cedric Russell scored 26 points for the Ragin’ Cajuns (0-1), who trailed 5340 at halftime.

■ No. 9 Duke 81, Coppin State 71: At Durham, N.C., freshman Jalen Johnson had 19 points, 19 rebounds, five assists and four blocks for the Blue Devils (1-0), who overcame 22 turnovers with 53-percent shooting. DeJean Clayton and Anthony Tarke each scored 22 points for the Eagles (0-1), who shot 33 percent but made 10 3-pointers.

■ No. 13 Michigan State 80, Notre Dame 70: At East Lansing, Mich., Aaron Henry had 14 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists for the Spartans (2-0), who went on a 26-0 run spanning halftime. Prentiss Hubb scored 23 points for the Fighting Irish (0-1).

■ Brigham Young 82, Utah Valley 60: At Provo, Utah, Alex Barcello scored 20 points for the Cougars (3-0), who shot 52.6 percent and held the Wolverines (1-1) to 36.8 percent. Trey Woodbury scored 24 points for Utah Valley, which trailed 38-24 at halftime.

MOUNTAIN WEST Wyoming 97, Mississipp­i Valley State

61: At Laramie, Wyo., Hunter Thompson scored 25 points and Marcus Williams 20 for

the Cowboys (1-0), who shot 52.2 percent and held the Delta Devils (0-3) to 36.8 percent. Kam’ron Cunningham had 24 points for MVSU, which trailed 57-26 at halftime.

■ Air Force 66, Cal State Northridge 61: At T-Mobile Arena, Chris Joyce matched his career high with 23 points for the Falcons (1-0), who led 38-25 at halftime. T.J. Starks had 22 points and Alex Merkviladz­e 12 rebounds for the Matadors (1-1).
