Johnson excels as Gaels get by Lions

Logan Johnson scored 25 points to lead Saint Mary’s past Loyola Marymount 52-47 in a quarterfin­al of the West Coast Conference men’s basketball tournament Saturday at Orleans Arena.

Tommy Kuhse added 12 points for the fourth-seeded Gaels (14-8), who next face top-seeded and top-ranked Gonzaga (24-0) in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Monday.

Eli Scott had 18 points and eight rebounds for the fifth-seeded Lions (13-9), who never led over the final 10 minutes. LMU trailed 2421 at halftime.

Saint Mary’s shot only 39.5 percent but held the Lions to 37.2 percent. The Gaels missed 13 of 15 3-point attempts, while LMU missed 13 of 16.

Mattias Markusson had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lions, who held a 3125 edge in rebounds.

Pepperdine 78, Santa Clara 70:

Colbey Ross had 25 points and 12 assists for the third-seeded Waves (12-11), who repaid the seventh-seeded Broncos (12-8) for an 86-82 loss from Feb. 20.

Kessler Edwards scored 21 points and Jan Zidek 13 for Pepperdine, which next plays second-seeded Brigham Young (19-5) in a semifinal at 9 p.m. Monday.

Guglielmo Caruso had 16 points and nine rebounds for Santa Clara, which trailed 40-35 at halftime. The Broncos shot 41.4 percent, while the Waves shot 44.1 percent.

Josip Vrankic scored 15 points and Jalen Williams 13 for Santa Clara, and each had 10 rebounds. Pepperdine held a 41-38 edge in rebounds.

WOMEN San Francisco 69, Saint Mary’s 63:

Lucija Kostic had 13 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and six steals for the third-seeded Dons (15-9), who went ahead to stay with 6½ minutes left and overcame a 40-37 rebounding edge by the seventh-seeded Gaels (7-19).

San Francisco, which led 35-31 at halftime, next faces second-seeded Brigham Young (17-4) in a semifinal at 2 p.m. Monday.

Lucie Hoskova scored 18 points and Ionna Krimili 15 for the Dons, who won their fourth straight. The second half featured six lead changes, though San Francisco led by as many as 11 points in the final quarter.

■ Santa Clara 83, Loyola Marymount 68: Merle Wiehl scored 28 points and Lindsey VanAllen 22 for the fourth-seeded Broncos (14-10), who shot 57.7 percent and scored 29 points off 19 turnovers by the eighth-seeded Lions (7-19).

Santa Clara, which didn’t trail after closing the first half on a 22-3 run, next faces No. 18-ranked Gonzaga (21-3) — the top seed — in a semifinal at 11 a.m. Monday.

Khari Clark had 16 points and seven rebounds and Ariel Johnson 13 points and six rebounds for LMU, which trailed 25-22 before being held without a field goal for the next 5:14.
