Softball team splits two close games with Aztecs

Jenny Bressler pitched a five-hit shutout to lead UNLV past host San Diego State 1-0 in the first game of a Mountain West softball doublehead­er Saturday. The Aztecs won the second game 7-6 on two 10th-inning errors. Denise Armendariz went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the second game for the Rebels (15-9, 4-1), including a tying tworun double in the seventh. Maggie Balint pitched 13 innings in the two games for SDSU (14-8, 2-3), allowing three runs on five hits.

■ Baseball: At Colorado Springs, Colo., Braydon Altorfer had an RBI double in Air Force’s eight-run fourth inning and a two-run single in the sixth, leading the Falcons past the Rebels 10-7 to cap a Mountain West doublehead­er sweep. Jason Sharman had three RBIs for UNLV (8-6, 6-5), which trailed 10-1 after six. In the opener, Blake Covin hit a go-ahead RBI triple in the sixth for Air Force (9-8, 3-5) in its 4-3 win. Brendan Brooks had two hits and two RBIs for the Rebels.

■ Volleyball: At Reno, Mariena Hayden had nine kills and Paris Oliveira 16 digs to lead the Mountain Westchampi­on Rebels (11-0) to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 win over UNR (3-11) for their third straight sweep and sixth of the season.

■ Women’s tennis: At San Diego, freshmen Zita Kovacs and Aura Fang won in singles and teamed for a doubles victory to lead the Rebels (5-4) to a 4-0 triumph over UNR (5-2) in both teams’ Mountain West opener.

■ Men’s tennis: At Santa Barbara, Calif., No. 2 singles player Jordan Sauer notched the lone win for the Rebels (4-9) in their 6-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara (2-3).

■ Men’s swimming: At Greensboro, N.C., Vuk Celic placed 20th in the 1,650 freestyle (14:58.26) at the NCAA championsh­ips.
