Angels’ Sandoval misses no-hitter
MINNEAPOLIS — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Patrick Sandoval lost his shot at a no-hitter with one out in the ninth inning when rookie Brent Rooker hit a soft double, but the left-hander still managed to edge the Minnesota Twins 2-1 Saturday night.
Sandoval, 24, who began the game with a 3-13 career record, struck out a career-high 13.
There have been seven no-hitters in the majors this season. The big league record of eight was set in 1884, the first year overhand pitching was permitted.
Sandoval (3-4) smiled after Rooker’s hit, retired the next batter and then was pulled after 108 pitches.
■ Astros 4, Rangers 1: At Houston, Framber Valdez and the Houston bullpen took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as Texas lost a season-worst 11th in a row. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a leadoff single against reliever Ryne Stanek in the eighth to end the no-hit bid.
■ Dodgers 1 Rockies 0: At Los Angeles, Austin Barnes homered in the secocnd inning and Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save in 26 opportunities. Jansen blew saves against San Francisco on Wednesday and Thursday.
■ Yankees 4, Red Sox 3: At Boston, Rougned Odor’s two-run double highlighted a four-run rally in the eighth as New York won for just the third time in 12 games against Boston. Gleyber Torres’ bloop single scored Odor with the decisive run.
■ Royals 9, Tigers 8: At Kansas City, Salvador Perez hit his 23rd homer, a three-run shot, in a fourrun fourth and Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer in a five-run seventh as Kansas City won its fourth straight.
■ Rays 8, Indians 2: At Cleveland, Austin Meadows hit a pair of two-run homers and Ji-Man Choi had three RBIs as Tampa Bay extended its winning streak over Cleveland to 11 games. The Rays have not lost to the Indians since May 24, 2019.
■ Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 3: At Chicago, Daulton Varsho homered in his third straight game and hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run seventh inning.
■ Braves 15, Phillies 3: At Philadelphia, Atlanta socked five homers and moved back into a tie with Philadelphia for second in the NL East. Ozzie Albies and Joc Peterson had three-run blasts; , Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley had two-run shots; and Abraham Almonte hit one with the bases empty.
■ Marlins 3, Padres 2: At Miami, Jesús Aguilar’s two-run single in the seventh was decisive. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his NL-leading 30th homer for San Diego.
■ Orioles 5, Nationals 3: At Baltimore, Matt Harvey allowed one hit in six scoreless innings and Trey Mancini and Ryan Mountcastle each hit solo homers.
■ Brewers 6, White Sox 1: At Milwaukee, Rowdy Tellez hit his first two homers as a Milwaukee player and Corbin Burnes pitched six strong innings.
■ Reds 5, Cardinals 3: At Cincinnati, Jesse Winker homered, doubled and drove in four runs and Luis Castillo pitched seven solid innings.
■ Blue Jays 10, Mets 3: At New York, All-Star Teoscar Hernández hit two of his team’s five home runs as Toronto ended a three-game losing skid. George Springer, Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette also homered for the Blue Jays, the MLB leaders with 149 homers.
■ Pirates 10, Giants 2: At San Francisco, Gregory Polanco drove in three runs, including his 11th homer, and Wil Crowe allowed two runs in 5⅓ innings.
