Report: Jaguars fired Meyer for cause, don’t plan to pay

- Review-Journal wire services

Former Jacksonville coach Urban Meyer was fired for cause, and the team does not intend to pay him for the final four years left on his contract, multiple sources reported.

Owner Shad Khan dismissed Meyer early Thursday after weeks of analysis that focused on Meyer’s mounting public blunders and missteps behind the scenes. Meyer’s firing reportedly was not tied to any one incident during his 11 months on the job.

“I just apologize to Jacksonville,” Meyer told NFL.com in his first public comments since Wednesday. “I love Jacksonville. It’s one of the reasons I took the job. I still think Shad’s a great owner.”

Florida is an “at-will” employment state, meaning employers or employees can terminate employment at any time and without any advance warning. That could make it tougher for Meyer to prove he was wrongly fired or should be owed the rest of his contract.

The Jaguars (2-11) host Houston (211) on Sunday, with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell serving as interim coach.

■ Rams: Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., running back Darrell Henderson and four other players were activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list, and two players were added to the list, leaving the team with 25 on the list ahead of Tuesday’s game against Seattle.

■ Washington: Defensive ends Montez Sweat, James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen were activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list, leaving the team with 19 players on the list ahead of Tuesday’s game at Philadelphia.

■ Jets: Rookie running back Michael Carter (ankle) and tight end Tyler Kroft (chest) were activated from injured reserve. Carter has rushed for a team-best 430 yards and four TDs.

■ Vikings: Cornerback Bashaud Breeland was waived after a verbal altercation with coaches and teammates at practice Saturday. The 29-year-old had started all 13 games this season.

■ Cardinals: Running back Chase Edmonds (ankle) was activated from IR. The 25-year-old has run for 430 yards at an average of 5.7 per carry in nine games this season.
