Kershaw, Betts star as Dodgers best Cubs twice

CHICAGO — Clayton Kershaw pitched seven shutout innings in the opener, Mookie Betts drove in five runs in the nightcap, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 and 6-2 to sweep a split doublehead­er Saturday.

Betts smacked a three-run double in the second inning of Game 2 to cap a four-run rally and added a two-run homer in the ninth. The Dodgers’ only other hit in Game 2 was a single in the ninth by Freddie Freeman. But the National League West leaders drew nine walks in their 17th win in 22 games.

Kershaw (4-0) allowed five hits while striking out two and walking one. Spring Valley product Tyler Anderson (3-0) went five innings for Los Angeles in the second game, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. The left-hander struck out seven.

Willson Contreras hit a solo homer in the Chicago fifth. He also tripled and scored in the first and singled in the eighth. But the Cubs lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

In the first game, Freeman doubled three times and scored twice. Austin Barnes homered and drove in three runs.

■ Blue Jays 8-2, Guardians 3-8: At Cleveland, George Springer and Raimel Tapia each drove in three runs in the first four innings off Shane Bieber (1-2) in Game 1. Triston McKenzie (2-2) struck out nine in six innings for Cleveland in Game 2.

■ Reds 9-5, Pirates 2-8: At Cincinnati, Tyler Stephenson went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs as Cincinnati ended a nine-game slide in Game 1. Bryan Reynolds, Yoshi Tsutsugo and Diego Castillo homered in Pittsburgh’s four-run first in Game 2.

■ Twins 1, Athletics 0: At Minneapoli­s, Jorge Polanco had three of Minnesota’s five hits, including a 451-foot home run in the sixth, and four Twins pitchers combined to strike out 15 while allowing three hits.

■ Marlins 8, Padres 0: At San Diego, Joe Dunand homered in his first major league at-bat, and Jorge Soler added a grand slam in the ninth to back Pablo Lopez (4-1), who pitched eight shutout innings.

■ Rockies 4, Diamondbac­ks 1: At Phoenix, Yonathan Daza, Jose Iglesias and Connor Joe hit consecutiv­e two-out, run-scoring singles in the ninth off closer Mark Melancon (0-3).

■ White Sox 3, Red Sox 1: At Boston, Leury Garcia had two of Chicago’s 10 hits and a tying sacrifice fly in the ninth, and Jose Abreu hit a goahead RBI double in the 10th.

■ Rays 8, Mariners 2: At Seattle, Manuel Margot hit a grand slam and Brandon Lowe two solo homers to back Drew Rasmussen (3-1), who allowed one run in five innings.

■ Giants 13, Cardinals 7: At San Francisco, Wilmer Flores hit a grand slam in the San Francisco first and totaled six RBIs as the Giants halted a five-game skid.

■ Nationals 7, Angels 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Josh Bell, Yadiel Hernandez and Nelson Cruz homered, and Maikel Franco added two hits and three RBIs for Washington.

■ Braves 3, Brewers 2: At Atlanta, Ronald Acuna Jr. homered to back Max Fried (4-2), who allowed one run in seven innings to beat Corbin Burnes (1-2).

■ Astros 3, Tigers 2: At Houston, Jose Altuve homered in the third and scored on Michael Brantley’s triple in Houston’s two-run eighth.

■ Mets at Phillies, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d as part of a traditiona­l doublehead­er Sunday.

■ Rangers at Yankees, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d for Monday.

■ Royals at Orioles, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d for Monday.
