Osaka, slowed by Achilles injury, to skip Wimbledon

-

Naomi Osaka pulled out of Wimbledon, citing a lingering left Achilles tendon problem and marking the second straight year she’s decided to sit out the grass-court major. The 24-year-old fourtime major champion and former No. 1-ranked player hasn’t played an official match since losing in the French Open’s first round on May 24, and her ranking has fallen to No. 43. All of Osaka’s major titles came on hard courts, and she hasn’t won a Wimbledon match since 2018.

■ ATP: At London, defending champion Matteo Berrettini of Italy beat Botic van de Zandschlup of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-3 in a Queen’s Club semifinal and will face Filip Krajinovic of Serbia for the title. Krajinovic, seeking his first tour title, ousted two-time champion Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3.

■ WTA: At Berlin, fourth-ranked Onus Jabeur of Tunisia denied Coco Gauff a berth in her first grass-court final, beating the 18-year-old American 7-6 (4), 6-2 in a Berlin Open semifinal. Jabeur next faces Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, who beat second-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4.

■ ATP: At Halle, Germany, top-ranked Daniil Medvedev of Russia beat Oscar Otte of Germany 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a Halle Open semifinal and will face Hubert Hurkacz of Poland for the title. Hurkacz was out-aced 30-27 in his 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) win over Nick Kyrgios of Australia.

■ WTA: At Gaiba, Italy, top-seeded Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium beat Harmony Tan of France 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a Veneto Open semifinal and will face Sara Errani of Italy for the title. Errani, 35, a French Open finalist in 2012, is ranked 213th.
