GOP swamp must be drained
I agree with Brian Greenspun’s July 23 column, “It’s time to defend our country, not Donald Trump,” which stated of the former president’s legal entanglements that, “Once we start excusing anyone from the kind of behavior that imperils our democracy, it cannot be long that our democracy crumbles and anarchy takes root.”
Let’s review those entanglements. First were impeachment proceedings for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress after he attempted to extort Ukraine’s president to find dirt on Joe Biden. Then there was a second impeachment proceeding for inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
Despite overwhelming evidence to convict Trump after both impeachments, Senate Republicans voted to acquit.
The third legal entanglement was E. Jean Carroll’s civil suit for rape, with the jury finding Trump civilly liable for sexual assault. The fourth, fifth and sixth potential charges involve allegations of election interference in Georgia; the unlawful removal, retention, secreting and dissemination of classified documents; and federal charges involving the insurrection.
It’s been said many times that this is a nation of laws and not of men, and President Abraham Lincoln recognized that our government is of the people, by the people and for the people.
This is why we must work to prevent the reelection of Trump and those Republicans who failed to vote for his impeachments.
As Tyree Scott, a labor leader and civil rights leader is quoted as saying, “You can’t leave those who created the problem in charge of the solution.”
