OT penalty shot caps rally, lifts Red Wings by Canucks
Defenseman Jake Walman scored on a penalty shot 23 seconds into overtime, capping host Detroit’s rally from a twogoal third-period deficit in its 4-3 win over Vancouver on Saturday.
Walman was awarded the penalty shot after defenseman Quinn Hughes slashed him on a breakaway. Walman also had the primary assist on Michael Rasmussen’s tying goal 7:51 into the third period.
Patrick Kane, who missed the Red Wings’ previous seven games with a lower-body injury, returned to play in his 1,200th NHL game and assisted on Daniel Sprong’s power-play goal 2:34 into the third.
Alex Lyon stopped 28 shots for Detroit, which is 4-1-1 in its past six games.
Elias Pettersson had a goal and two assists for the Pacific-leading Canucks, who lost their second straight after going 10-0-2 in their previous 12 games.
The Red Wings grabbed the lead 45 seconds into the first period when former Golden Knight David Perron assisted on a goal by Lucas Raymond.
Filip Hronek had a goal and an assist in Vancouver’s three-goal second period that put the Canucks up 3-1.
■ Capitals 3, Bruins 0: At Boston, T.J. Oshie scored his 299th NHL goal, and Charlie Lindgren stopped 18 shots in his fifth shutout and third this season as Washington halted a six-game slide. Alex Ovechkin scored his 57th empty-net goal with 27 seconds left to pass Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history. Boston, which had won three of its previous four games, was outshot 28-18 — including 23-7 through two periods.
■ Panthers 4, Avalanche 0: At Sunrise, Fla., Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 35 shots in his 41st shutout and third this season, and Aleksander Barkov had a goal and two assists in Florida’s sixth win in seven games. Colorado center Nathan Mackinnon exited after landing headfirst on the ice with 11:18 left in the Avs’ fourth straight loss.
■ Stars 3, Canadiens 2: At Montreal, Tyler Seguin scored twice for Dallas, which had a 38-20 edge in shots and won for the fifth time in six games. The Stars are 8-2-1 in their past 11. Former Golden Knights prospect Nick Suzuki had a goal and an assist for Montreal, which has alternated wins and losses for its past five games.
■ Hurricanes 1, Devils 0, OT: At Raleigh, N.C., Sebastian Aho knocked a rebound of a Martin Necas shot out of midair past goalie Vitek Vanecek with 1:20 left in overtime in Carolina’s fifth win in six games. Pyotr Kochetkov had 34 saves in his sixth shutout and second this season. Vanecek stopped 31 shots.
■ Predators 5, Coyotes 4, OT: At Nashville, Tenn., Ryan Mcdonagh scored 1:36 into overtime, capping Nashville’s rally from a two-goal third-period deficit. The Predators had lost three in a row and five of their previous six. Las Vegas product Jason Zucker had three assists for Arizona in its fifth straight loss.
■ Jets 2, Penguins 1: At Winnipeg, Manitoba, Nino Niederreiter and Mark Scheifele scored in the first period to back Connor Hellebuyck, who stopped 35 shots, as Winnipeg halted five-game slide. Sidney Crosby’s nine-game point streak ended for Pittsburgh in its fifth loss in seven games.
■ Lightning 4, Blue Jackets 2: At Columbus, Ohio, Branden Hagel had a goal and two assists to back Andrei Vasilevskiy, who stopped 32 shots, as Tampa Bay halted a two-game skid. Boone Jenner scored twice in the third period for Columbus, which has lost three of its past four.
■ Senators 5, Maple Leafs 3: At Ottawa, Ontario, Shane Pinto had a goal and two assists for Ottawa, which won its third straight and moved to 6-1-2 in its past nine games. Auston Matthews scored his Nhl-best 42nd goal for Toronto, which had won four of its previous five.
■ Flyers 3, Kraken 2: At Philadelphia, Sean Couturier scored the go-ahead goal 5:30 into the third period for Philadelphia, which yielded only two third-period shots and won its third in a row. Seattle, playing its first game since Jan. 30, has lost seven of its past nine.
■ Flames 5, Islanders 2: At New York, defenseman Mackenzie Weegar notched his first NHL hat trick to back Jacob Markstrom, who had 35 saves and an assist in Calgary’s season-best fourth straight win. New York had a 37-24 edge in shots.
■ Blues 3, Sabres 1: At Buffalo, N.Y., Jake Neighbours scored twice to back Joel Hofer, who stopped 33 shots in St. Louis’ sixth win in seven games.
