Last-place Blackhawks thrive, end Stars’ win streak at eight

Connor Bedard, Andreas Athanasiou and Seth Jones scored in the second period as host Chicago stopped Dallas’ franchise-record win streak at eight games with a 3-2 victory Saturday.

Petr Mrazek stopped 42 saves for the lastplace Blackhawks, who have alternated wins and losses for their past five games.

Roope Hintz scored his 29th goal for Central Division-leading Dallas, which is 13-3-0 in its past 16 games. Jamie Benn scored with 4:23 left, giving the Stars eight 20-goal scorers for the first time.

At 48-20-9 with 105 points, Dallas is three points ahead of second-place Colorado. The Stars and Avalanche meet Sunday in Denver in what Dallas coach Pete Deboer said is “our biggest game of the year.” The Stars and Avalanche each have five games remaining.

Bedard leads NHL rookies with 22 goals and 59 points in 62 games. Athanasiou’s goal was his first in 22 games this season after missing four months with a groin injury.

Jones, a defenseman, has eight goals on the season — including seven in his past 14 games.

Scott Wedgewood had 14 saves for Dallas. Jake Oettinger, the Stars’ No. 1 goalie, recorded shutouts in the team’s previous two games.

■ Penguins 5, Lightning 4: At Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin had two goals and an assist for Pittsburgh, which went ahead to stay on Michael Bunting’s goal 5:28 into the third period. The Penguins are 6-0-1 in their past seven games. Tampa Bay had been 10-1-1 in its previous 12.

■ Islanders 2, Predators 0: At New York, Semyon Varlamov stopped a season-high 40 shots in his 41st shutout and third this season, and New York won its fourth in a row. The Isles had lost 10 in a row to Nashville dating to 2017.

■ Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 2: At Montreal, Auston Matthews scored his league-leading 64th goal this season in Toronto’s four-goal second period to reach 100 points for a second time and extend his point streak to 10 games.

■ Blue Jackets 6, Flyers 2: At Columbus, Ohio, Damon Severson and Zach Werenski each scored twice for Columbus to back Jet Greaves, who stopped 37 shots to hand Philadelph­ia its seventh straight loss.

■ Sharks 3, Blues 2, OT: At San Jose, Calif., William Eklund capped his hat trick with 1:04 left in overtime, and Devin Cooley stopped 34 shots in his first NHL win in San Jose’s second victory in 13 games.

■ Devils 4, Senators 3: At Ottawa, Ontario, Brendan Smith had a goal and two assists for New Jersey, which led 4-1 after two periods and snapped a three-game skid. Ottawa lost its third in a row.

■ Bruins 3, Panthers 2, OT: At Boston, Jesper Boqvist scored 2:05 into overtime, and first-place Boston moved five points ahead of second-place Florida in the Atlantic Division.

■ Jets 4, Wild 2: At St. Paul, Minn., Vladislav Namestniko­v had a goal and two assists as Winnipeg won its third in a row. Kirill Kaprizov scored both Minnesota goals.

■ Silver Knights 4, Eagles 1: At Dollar Loan Center, Lukas Cormier had a goal and an assist to back Isaiah Saville, who stopped 39 shots, as the Silver Knights (27-32-8) halted a twogame skid with their second win in seven games. Colorado (36-22-7) had a 40-31 edge in shots.
