Fresno State sophomore lefty tosses shutout, keys win over softball team

Sophomore left-hander Serayah Neiss pitched a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts and no walks to lead host Fresno State past UNLV 7-0 in a Mountain West softball game. Sophia Medellin went 3-for-4 and scored twice. The Bulldogs (29-15, 9-6) held an 8-3 edge in hits and had five players with one RBI. Marisa Bowman’s double for the Rebels (27-14, 10-5) was the game’s lone extra-base hit.

■ Men’s tennis: At Reno, Illia Maksymchuk and Taiyo Hirano won in singles and doubles for the Rebels (8-11, 1-4 Mountain West) in their 4-3 loss to UNR (6-14, 2-4). UNLV is seeded sixth for the eight-team league tournament and will open against No. 3 seed New Mexico (13-8, 3-1) in a quarterfin­al at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Darling Tennis Center. Utah State (17-4, 4-1) is the top seed.

■ Women’s tennis: The defending Mountain West champion Rebels (14-7, 7-3) are seeded fourth for the 11-team league tournament and will open against No. 5 UNR (11-8, 5-4) in a quarterfin­al at 10 a.m. Thursday at Darling Tennis Center. New Mexico (19-2, 8-1) is the top seed.

■ Track and field: At Walnut, Calif., Chinyere Okoro, Kennedi Porter, Annakay Maitland and Jaydea Carter tied their season-best mark in the 400-meter relay in 44.29 seconds to place ninth at the Mt. SAC Relays.
