Mets win sixth in row, add to Dodgers’ woes

-

Starling Marte hit a go-ahead, 432-foot threerun homer in the sixth, and first baseman Pete Alonso made a spectacular rally-killing play in the bottom of the inning for the New York Mets, who beat the host Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 on Saturday for their sixth straight win.

The Mets won their fifth straight series and have gone 12-3 after an 0-5 start. They issued 10 walks, their most since Aug. 15, and hadn’t walked 10 in a win since May 13, 2014.

The Dodgers (12-11) lost for a seventh time in nine games. They went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13. They’ve lost three straight series for the first time since June and three straight series at home for the first time since August 2018.

Reed Garrett struck out the side in the ninth and hopped off the mound in celebration after the 31-year-old notched his first big league save after 39 in the minors and two in Japan.

Michael Tonkin (1-2) got the win, three days after the Mets claimed him off waivers from Minnesota, which had acquired him from the Mets in an April 9 trade.

Ryan Yarbrough (2-1) walked pinch hitter Zack Short leading off the sixth and hit Brandon Nimmo with a pitch with one out. Ryan Brasier relieved, and Marte hit his second pitch over the wall in center.
