Mountain West to look at changing way football title game configured

-

The Mountain West Conference will discuss at its spring meetings the possibility of changing the way its football championship game is configured starting in 2016.

Commissioner Craig Thompson told CBSSports.com on Saturday that it could be in the best interest of the Mountain West to create its own metric for how it chooses the two “best” teams that play in the title game.

“We’re having the game at the risk of a $6 million New Year’s Bowl,” Thompson said.

The $6 million is the amount Boise State earned for itself and the 11 conference partners in January for reaching the Fiesta Bowl — one of the so-called “Golden Ticket” bowls in the College Football Playoffs. The Broncos beat Arizona 38-30 in the bowl game.
