Sandoval faces battle on tax plan

- Jody Roman, Las Vegas

I just read the article “Nevada Senate passes Gov. Brian Sandoval’s tax plan” (lasvegassun. com, April 21), which surprised me

’m in favor of educational funding and had assumed the taxes being raised would not fund education. I was astonished to learn that Gov. Sandoval falls out of line with his party when it comes to views on taxes and educational funding.

It is quite an accomplishment to receive a supermajority vote in the Senate. I gathered it will be an uphill battle for Sandoval to get the bill passed through the Assembly.

I hope to see some type of compromise between the “nonew-tax wing” and Republicans/ Democrats who are for the bill. With the sustainable funding of Nevada’s educational system, we will be able to build a better future for Nevada. With a bruised educational system, many families outside the state looking to move here will notice the national ranking and be appalled by the information they gather. With a better educational system, the local population will grow, which will attract businesses to Nevada.

Many of the Republican Assemblymen and women have voiced their concerns that the bill will kill jobs and scare businesses out of Nevada, but I think more research should be done outside of the state to gather data on the effects of business tax increases and assess the pros and cons associated with the taxes.
