51s erupt early in win over Salt Lake

-

After managing just three hits in a shutout loss Thursday night, 51s manager Wally Backman said he thought his team seemed a bit tired.

Evidently, they didn’t have that same problem Friday, as they recorded 16 hits in an 11-7 victory over the Salt Lake Bees at Cashman Field.

After the Bees scored twice in the second inning on an RBI single and a bases-loaded balk, Josh Zeid pitched out of the jam.

From there, the offense erupted for six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Roger Bernadina hit a two-run homer to rightcenter to tie the game, and Kevin Plawecki broke it open with a grand slam, his eighth home run at Triple A this season.

Las Vegas (64-71) looked as if it could be heading toward a blowout, scoring two runs in the sixth on Gavin Cecchini’s two-run homer and three in the seventh on RBI singles from Ty Kelly, Brandon Nimmo and Cecchini.

But after Zeid’s exit, Salt Lake (59-73) started chipping away with two runs off Jeff Walters and three off Chase Huchingson — two earned — to tighten the gap before Paul Sewald nailed down a four-out save.
