No. 24 Utah awakens late to edge Southern California

SALT LAKE CITY — Troy Williams threw for 270 yards and two touchdown and ran for another score for No. 24 Utah in the Utes’ 31-27 comeback victory over Southern California on Friday.

Utah (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) came back in a stirring fashion, with Tim Patrick catching an 18-yard touchdown pass at the pylon with 16 seconds left to cap a 15-play, 93-yard drive.

Patrick, who totaled six catches for 100 yards, had his third 100-yard receiving game of the season. ROUNDUP

The Trojans (1-3, 0-2) controlled most of the game and had a 27-17 fourth-quarter lead, but Utah scored 14 straight points.

The Utes attempted to control the game on the ground early against the nation’s No. 98 run defense, but USC tightened up and forced Utah to win through the air.

Sam Darnold threw for 253 yards and ran for a touchdown in his first career start after replacing Sam Browne for the Trojans, who are 1-3 for the first time since 2001.

■ Eastern MiChi-an 27, Wyomin- 24 — At Ypsilanti, Mich., Ian Eriksen scored untouched on a 15-yard draw play with 1:35 left for the Eagles, who are 3-1 for the first time since 1995.

Marcus Epps returned an interception 66 yards in the first quarter to open the scoring for the Cowboys (2-2), who went up 24-20 with 12:45 left when linebacker Logan Wilson returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown. BIG 12

■ Texas Christian 33, Southern Methodist 3 — At Dallas, Kenny Hill threw for 452 yards and two second-half touchdowns, including a 75-yarder on a quick slant to John Diarse on the first play after halftime.

Diarse, a junior transfer from Louisiana State, totaled six catches for 139 yards for the Horned Frogs (3-1), who got two field goals apiece from Brandon Hatfield and Ryan Graf.

The Mustangs (2-2) held a high-scoring Big 12 team without a first-half touchdown for the second time this season.
