■ Red Sox 2, Rays 1 — At St. Petersburg, Fla., David Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the first inning to set the RBIs record for a major leaguer in his final season as AL East-leading Boston won its ninth straight. Ortiz’s 37th homer came off Chris Archer (8-19) and raised his RBI total to 124, one more than Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1920. The Red Sox lowered their magic number to two for clinching a playoff berth.

■ Blue Jays 9, Yankees 0 — At Toronto, Francisco Liriano struck out six in six innings and combined with three relievers on a three-hit shutout, and Troy Tulowitzki hit two two-run singles as Toronto maintained a one-game lead in the AL wild-card standings. New York was blanked for the second straight night and lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

■ Indians 10, White Sox 4 — At Cleveland, Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer and a two-run double, and Mike Napoli drove in two runs to become the first Cleveland player to reach 100 RBIs in nine years as the Indians dropped their magic number to three games for their first division title since 2007. Chicago lost its sixth straight.

■ Tigers 8, Royals 3 — At Detroit, Justin Upton, Victor Martinez and Cameron Maybin homered to back Michael Fulmer (11-7), who gave up one run on eight hits and struck out nine in seven innings for his first victory since Aug. 14, as Detroit maintained a half-game lead on Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

■ Angels 10, Astros 6 — At Houston, Yunel Escobar hit a two-run homer, and pinch hitter Rafael Ortega had three RBIs during Los Angeles’ six-run ninth inning as Houston fell 2½ games behind Detroit for the second AL wild card. Ken Giles (2-5) was charged with all six Angels runs, on three hits and three walks, in the ninth.

■ Mariners 10, Twins 1 — At Minneapoli­s, Nelson Cruz hit a towering two-run homer and totaled four RBIs, and Robinson Cano had four hits and two RBIs as Seattle pulled within two games of Detroit for the second AL wild card. James Paxton (5-7) held Minnesota to one run on five hits and struck out nine in seven innings. time in seven starts. Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 27 games with a sixth-inning double for the Braves.

■ Brewers 5, Reds 4 — At Milwaukee, Sierra Vista product Chris Carter hit his career-best 38th home run and added an RBI groundout for Milwaukee, which pulled ahead on Ryan Braun’s two-run single in the seventh inning. Jose Peraza had put Cincinnati ahead with a three-run homer in the fifth.
