■ Yankees 7, Blue Jays 5 — At Toronto, Mark Teixeira hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and Aaron Hicks added a game-winning blast as New York avoided a four-game sweep. The Yankees scored five runs in a bat-around ninth, matching their total from the previous 35 innings in the series. Teixeira and Hicks both homered off Jason Grilli (7-6), who pitched with Roberto Osuna unavailabl­e.

■ White Sox 7, Rays 1 — At Chicago, James Shields (6-18) pitched six effective innings for his first win in two months, Justin Morneau and Carlos Sanchez each hit a two-run homer and Chicago won its third straight. Shields allowed one run and seven hits, using six strikeouts to wriggle out of jams. He was 0-6 in his previous 10 starts and is 4-11 with the White Sox.

■ Mariners 4, Astros 3, 11 innings — At Houston, Robinson Cano hit his second homer of the game with two outs in the 11th inning and Seattle moved two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card. Houston, which has lost four of five, is now 3½ games back in the race. The Astros scored two runs in the ninth but then Cano sent a slider from Luke Gregerson (4-3) into the second deck.

■ Angels 2, Athletics 1 — At Anaheim, Calif., Yunel Escobar scored when Ryan Dull bobbled Albert Pujols’ weak grounder back to the mound in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles earned its fifth victory in six games. Mike Trout hit his 29th homer for the Angels, and Jered Weaver pitched five scoreless innings of one-hit ball before leaving with lower-back tightness.
