GIRLS STATE TENNIS

“Their doubles were all pretty even, so our girls just had to figure out their style of play,” Jackson said.

The clincher came from the doubles team of Jessica Duff and Sophia Potamitis, who to that point were 0-3 but pulled out a 10-8 win over twin sisters Sage and Shayna Schula, who were 2-1 through the first three rounds.

The match was tied 6-6 after two rounds. Coronado won three of the first five sets in the third round, but Reno’s McKenna LeVitt forced the tiebreaker with a 6-2 win over Alina Kacharovskaya.

The doubles team of Megan King and Mana Iritani went 3-0 for Coronado, and Nikoleta Nikoloff was 3-0 in singles.

In the other semifinal, Palo Verde built an early lead behind strong doubles play and cruised to an 11-7 win over Bishop Manogue.

The Panthers won all six doubles sets in the first two rounds and led 9-3. In the third round, the Panthers’ No. 1 doubles team of Abby Lewis and Kaya Richardson provided the clinching win, 6-0 over Claire Sedgwick and Lisette Melendez. CLASS 3A

Desert Pines never had reached the state tournament in boys or girls tennis since opening in 1999. But that changed Thursday for the Jaguars girls.

Cassandra Bueno and Veronica Palacios each went 3-0 in singles to lead Desert Pines to an 11-7 win over Churchill County in a Class 3A state semifinal at Reno Tennis Center.

Desert Pines (17-5) will face The Meadows (16-2) in the state final at noon Friday at Tahoe Donner Tennis Center in Truckee, California.

The doubles team of Shelly Alvarado and Yazaret Arredondo also finished 3-0 for Desert Pines.

The Meadows, which defeated the Jaguars 16-2 in the Southern Region final on Oct. 5, will be making its fifth consecutive state final appearance.

The Mustangs advanced with a 12-0 win over Truckee.
