Tigers DH Martinez out with heart issue

-

The Detroit Tigers put designated hitter Victor Martinez on the 10-day disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat.

Martinez came out of Thursday’s win over Tampa Bay in the seventh inning with a racing heartbeat, dizziness and cold sweats. He originally was treated in the clubhouse for dehydration but was taken to a hospital when the symptoms continued.

Martinez, 38, remained hospitalized Friday as doctors tried to find the cause.

“It’s a little scary,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “It’s not something that, at his age, you generally consider an issue or worry about.”

The Tigers called up catcher/ first baseman John Hicks from Triple-a Toledo. Ausmus plans to use the DH slot to rest players dealing with minor injuries.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera was the designated hitter Friday against the Rays.

■ Rangers: Right-hander

Tyson Ross was activated from the 60-day disabled list for his Texas debut following offseason thoracic outlet surgery, one of several Rangers transactions.

First baseman Mike Napoli (lower back strain) and center fielder Carlos Gomez (right hamstring strain) were activated from the DL, right-handed reliever Tony Barnette (right ring finger sprain) was placed on the 10-day DL, left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez was recalled from Triple-a Round Rock, utility players Ryan Rua and Jurickson Profar were optioned to Round Rock, and righthander Dillon Gee was designated for assignment.

Ross’ rehabilitation had been slowed by lower back tightness. In four outings with Round Rock, he allowed 16 earned runs on 23 hits and 11 walks, with 11 strikeouts, in 18 2/3 innings.

■ Yankees: Catcher Kyle Higashioka and outfielder Mason Williams were recalled from Triple-a Scranton/wilkes-barre to provide depth while catcher Gary Sanchez (tight groin) and outfielder Aaron Hicks (sore left Achilles) nurse injuries.

To create roster room,

Adam Warren (right shoulder inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos was optioned to Scranton/wilkes-barre.

Sanchez and Hicks sat out Friday and are day to day, manager Joe Girardi said.

■ Reds: A bronze statue of all-time hits leader Pete Rose will be dedicated Saturday outside the main gates at Great American Ball Park, capturing Rose in a headfirst slide.

Rose’s statue will join those of Joe Nuxhall, Frank Robinson, Ernie Lombardi, Ted Kluszewski, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez.

Former Big Red Machine teammates scheduled to appear include Bench, Morgan, Perez,

Jack Billingham, Dave Concepcion, Doug Flynn, George Foster and

Ken Griffey Sr., the team said.

■ Cubs: Second baseman/ outfielder Ben Zobrist (inflamed right wrist) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and infielder Tommy La Stella was recalled from Triple-a Iowa.

La Stella, in his third stint with Chicago this season, started Friday at third base in place of Kris Bryant, who was given a routine day off, manager Joe Maddon said.

■ Blue Jays: Chris Coghlan (left wrist contusion) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow utility player Steve Pearce (right calf strain) was activated from the DL.

Pearce, who had been out since May 15, went 2-for-22 on a rehabilitation assignment at two minor league levels. He started in left field Friday and homered.

■ Braves: Left fielder Matt Kemp is day to day with a sore left hamstring and hopes to avoid the disabled list for a second time this season.

Kemp, 32, ranks fourth in the National League in doubles with 19 and sixth in batting with a .327 average. He leads Atlanta in RBIS with 32 and is second in home runs with 11.

■ Marlins: First baseman Justin Bour (left ankle contusion) was activated from the disabled list, and catcher/first baseman Tomas Telis was optioned to Triple-a New Orleans.

Bour entered Friday hitting

.368 with 13 home runs and 31 RBIS since April 30.

■ Nationals: Right-hander Edwin Jackson, 33, agreed to a minor league contract with Washington following his release by Baltimore. A 2009 All-star, Jackson is 93-114 in 275 starts and 89 relief appearances over 15 big league seasons with 12 teams, with a 4.65 ERA.
