Yankees’ Chapman activated from DL
Aroldis Chapman rejoined his New York Yankees teammates Sunday ready to pitch again after more than a month on the disabled list.
The left-handed closer had been sidelined since May 13 with inflammation in the rotator cuff of his pitching shoulder.
Chapman, 29, threw two-thirds of an inning Friday for Double-a Trenton in which he gave up a run, walked two and struck out two.
He pitched one inning Sunday in New York’s 4-3 loss at Oakland, throwing eight pitches — seven for strikes — and notched one strikeout in a perfect eighth. He topped out at 103 mph.
For the season, Chapman has a 3.29 ERA in 13 2/3 innings, with 22 strikeouts, six walks and seven saves in eight opportunities.
■ Dodgers: Right-handed reliever Brock Stewart was recalled from Oklahoma City, and left-handed reliever Josh Ravin was optioned to the Triple-a club.
Stewart, 25, who got a late start to the season because of a shoulder issue, had a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings at Oklahoma City, with 13 strikeouts and no walks.
Also, first baseman/outfielder Peter O’brien was claimed off waivers from Texas and optioned to Oklahoma City, and left-hander Jason Wheeler was designated for assignment.
■ White Sox: Miguel Gonzalez (right shoulder inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow right-hander James Shields (right lat strain) was activated from the DL.
Shields, 35, who was out since April 21 in the first DL stint of his 12-year career, started Saturday at Toronto and allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings.
■ Rangers: Left-hander Cole Hamels (right oblique strain) will make what could be his final rehabilitation start Wednesday with Double-a Frisco. Hamels, 33, struck out three while yielding one hit in his first rehab outing for Frisco.
■ Tigers: Anibal Sanchez was recalled from Toledo, and fellow right-hander Buck Farmer was optioned to the Triple-a club. Sanchez, 33, who had a 4.60 ERA in 15 2/3 innings over four starts with Toledo, will start Monday at Seattle.
■ Diamondbacks: Center fielder A.J. Pollock (right groin strain) made first his rehabilitation appearance on Saturday with Triple-a Reno. He played five innings in center field against the 51s, as scheduled, and went 1-for-2 with a walk.
■ Rays: Catcher Wilson Ramos (ACL tear) caught six innings Saturday for Triple-a Durham, marking the first time he had caught on back-to-back days in his rehabilitation. The 2016 All-star had a scheduled day off Sunday.
■ Mariners: Max Povse’s contract was purchased from Double-a Arkansas, fellow righthanded reliever Robert Whalen was optioned to Triple-a Tacoma, and left-hander Dillon Overton was designated for assignment.
■ Reds: Catcher Stuart Turner (right hamstring strain) was activated from the disabled list, Jake Buchanan was optioned to Triple-a Louisville, and fellow righthander Asher Wojciechowski was designated for assignment.
■ Cubs: Right fielder Jason Heyward (left hand abrasion) exited Chicago’s 7-1 win at Pittsburgh in the fourth inning, and shortstop Addison Russell (sore right ankle) was held out of the Cubs’ lineup.
■ Rockies: Chad Qualls (lower back spasms) was placed on the 10-day disabled list for the second time this season, and fellow righthanded reliever Carlos Estevez was recalled from Triple-a Albuquerque.
■ Nationals: Right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley (upper right back muscle strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and righthander A.J. Cole was recalled from Triple-a Syracuse.
■ Pirates: Chris Stewart (left hamstring strain) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow catcher Jacob Stallings was optioned to Triple-a Indianapolis.
■ Indians: Right-handed reliever Shawn Armstrong was recalled from Columbus, and third baseman Giovanny Urshela was optioned to the Triple-a club.
■ Marlins: Left-hander
Justin Nicolino (left index finger contusion) will be activated from the disabled list to start Monday against Washington.
■ Orioles: Shortstop J.J.
Hardy (right wrist contusion) left Baltimore’s 8-5 win over St. Louis in the sixth after being hit by a pitch.
■ Giants: Outfielder Jarrett Parker (right clavicle fracture) will begin a rehabilitation assignment Monday with Triple-a Sacramento.
