Angels’ Trout, on mend from injury, set for rehab workout

Center fielder Mike Trout will participat­e in a full workout Tuesday with the Los Angeles Angels’ High-a affiliate at Inland Empire in the next step of his return from left thumb ligament surgery.

Trout, 25, will have a private workout Monday before heading to Inland Empire. If he is ready, Trout will play in rehabilita­tion games this week.

The two-time American League MVP took batting pratice Friday at Angel Stadium. He was injured sliding headfirst into second base on May 29.

He initially was projected to be out six to eight weeks.

■ Pirates: Two-time Gold Glove outfielder Starling Marte, nearing the end of his 80game drug suspension, went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his first rehabilita­tion game with High-a Bradenton. He is eligible to return to the majors on July 18.

■ Blue Jays: Right-hander Aaron Sanchez (blister on right middle finger) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks and struck out four in 4 1/3 innings for Triple-a Buffalo in what is expected to be his final rehabilita­tion start.

■ Auction: The baseball Pete Rose swatted to left-center field for his record-setting 4,192th hit in 1985 was sold at a Lelands.com auction for $403,657.20 to an unnamed bidder.

■ Phillies: Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (upper back strain) will make a rehabilita­tion start Tuesday with Double-a Reading and is targeting July 9 to return to Philadelph­ia’s rotation.

■ Rockies: Outfielder Gerardo Parra

(right quad strain) will begin a rehabilita­tion assignment with Triple-a Albuquerqu­e if an MRI examinatio­n Monday shows sufficient healing.

■ Tigers: Justin Verlander’s streak of 331 games with at least one strikeout ended when he was knocked out of Detroit’s 11-8 loss to Cleveland in the fourth inning.

■ Giants: Infielder Christian Arroyo suffered a fractured left hand Saturday while playing for Triple-a Sacramento and is expected to be out until September.

■ Diamondbac­ks: Outfielder Yasmany Tomas (right groin strain) is being re-evaluated after being pulled from a rehab game Saturday following a setback.

■ Rays: Manager Kevin Cash fractured his left ankle while jogging Sunday near Camden Yards but did not miss Tampa Bay’s series finale at Baltimore.

■ Rangers: Texas acquired former All-star reliever Jason Grilli, 40, from Toronto for High-a outfielder Eduard Pinto, 22, and cash.

■ Royals: Left-hander Matt Strahm was diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, and is return has no timetable.
