LEADING OFF

Outdoors writing has been part of sports sections since, well, since there were sports sections.

When you think about it, outdoors writing is not really about the competition involved in the rest of the section. It’s about hunting and fishing and conservation of wildlife.

But traditionally, this is the section where you found that sort of news.

Frankly, we missed having it in the RJ Sports section. And we missed having Doug Nielsen writing about the outdoors.

Beginning last week we brought back Nielsen after a two-week hiatus. You’ll find his column on Page 8C.

You spoke loudly when we eliminated his column, registering more than 100 emails and 50 phone calls.

You said you wanted his fish stories and his hunting tips back in the section. You said you enjoyed his conservation tips in the field. Heck, you even wanted to know what he saw at the “Shot Show” each year.

Because of that reaction, we decided he needed to be back in the RJ. Welcome back, Doug.

Oh, and we never got rid of the weekly fishing report. It was just on the Scoreboard page, where many people were not used to looking for it.
