Thumb knocks out Astros SS Correa

-

All-star shortstop Carlos Correa of the AL Westleading Houston Astros is expected to miss six to eight weeks because of a torn ligament in his left thumb.

The Astros put Correa on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, a day after he hurt himself taking a swing against Seattle. They expect to have him back in the lineup for the stretch run in September.

Infielder Colin Moran was recalled from Triple-a Fresno in time for the game against the Mariners.

Correa is batting .320 with 18 doubles and 20 home runs, and his 67 RBIS are second in the American League.

The Astros plan to play Moran at third base and split time at shortstop between Alex Bregman, who has played third base all season, and Marwin Gonzalez, the team’s superutility man.

“We’ll move some guys around,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “We’re so used to putting Correa out there every, single day and having the middle infield be set and moving the pieces on the corners and in the outfield. But things change quickly.”

■ Diamondbacks: Arizona acquired outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Detroit Tigers for a package of prospects, hoping to solidify a trouble spot while making a run toward the playoffs.

Detroit received

Double-a infielder Dawel Lugo, switch-hitting infield prospect Sergio Alcantara and shortstop Jose King in the deal. Lugo is regarded as the Diamondbacks’ No. 2 overall prospect.

Martinez is hitting .305 with 16 home runs and 39 RBIS.

■ Yankees: New York traded for third baseman Todd Frazier and righthanded relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle from the Chicago White Sox.

Blake Rutherford, the top Yankees outfield prospect, was sent to Chicago along with minor league pitcher Ian Clarkin, minor league outfielder Tito Polo and major league reliever Tyler Clippard.

Frazier is hitting only .206 this season but has 16 home runs and 44 RBIS.

■ Brewers: Milwaukee catcher Stephen Vogt is out for at least a month with a sprained left knee following a collision at home plate.

Vogt was hurt Monday when Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl ran into him in the fifth inning of Pittsburgh’s 4-2 victory. Kuhl was trying to score from second on a hit to right field.

The Brewers got Vogt off waivers from Oakland last month. He is hitting .250 with four home runs and nine RBIS in 12 games for Milwaukee.

■ Reds: Cincinnati placed right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman on the 10-day DL with right knee inflammation.

Feldman (7-7) is the sixth Reds pitcher who’s started at least one game this season to go on the disabled list. He allowed five runs and five hits, including two home runs, while pitching just the first inning of Monday’s 6-1 loss to Washington.

■ Twins: Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes will miss the rest of the season because of persistent arm trouble related to a condition that required rib removal surgery a year ago. He was 4-3 with a 5.87 ERA in 53 1/3 innings.
