51s shortstop Rosario earns callup to Mets

Shortstop Amed Rosario, the New York Mets’ top prospect, will join the Mets on Tuesday, general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters Monday.

Rosario, 21, was slashing .328/.367/.466 with 129 hits in 94 games with the 51s this season. He also had seven triples, seven home runs and 58 RBIS.

Rosario is the No. 2 overall prospect per Mlb.com and Mets fans have been clamoring for his promotion throughout the season. The shortstop was signed in 2012 as an internatio­nal free agent for $1.75 million and really started to break out last year at both Class-a Advanced St. Lucie and Double-a Binghamton.

Alderson told reporters that first baseman Dominic Smith, the Mets No. 2 prospect, “shouldn’t be far behind.” The Mets traded first baseman Lucas Duda to the Tampa Bay Rays before the trade deadline, which cleared the way for Smith’s eventual promotion.

■ PCL: Las Vegas 51s pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo was named the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Week for July 24-30 after throwing 11 1/3 scoreless innings. He was signed last week by the Mets after going 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA with the Bridgeport Bluefish.

Albaladejo, 34, made his 51s debut on July 25 and threw

4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief in Nashville. In his first start on July 29, he threw seven scoreless innings and struck out eight in a 3-0 win against Colorado Springs.

He pitched in the majors for the Nationals, Yankees and Diamondbac­ks, going a combined 6-3 with a 4.34 ERA in 66 games. the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

NBA MVP Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder will host the Melbourne United on Oct. 8, and the Phoenix Suns welcome the Brisbane Bullets on Oct. 13.

This will be the first time NBL teams travel to the United States to play NBA teams.

The NBA says Monday that there were a record-tying eight Australian players on last season’s opening-night NBA rosters.
