Foot strain puts SS Russell on DL

Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a strained right foot.

Russell is batting .241 with 10 homers and 36 RBIS. He has 11 errors after committing 14 a year ago. Manager Joe Maddon said the foot has been “bothering him noticeably” in recent days.

Chicago also recalled left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny from Triple-a Iowa.

■ Nationals: Two-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez will miss their scheduled starts this weekend.

Manager Dusty Baker decided to give Scherzer at least an extra day rather than have him pitch Sunday after the right-hander exited Tuesday’s game with neck spasms. Gonzalez won’t pitch Saturday; his wife is expecting their second child.

Edwin Jackson will start Saturday, and righty Erick Fedde, a Las Vegas High and UNLV product, will start Sunday.

(left forearm tightness) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow left-handed reliever

Sammy Solis was recalled from Triple-a Syracuse.

■ Blue Jays: Miguel Montero (right groin strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow catcher Rafael Lopez’s contract was purchased from Triple-a Buffalo. Also, Danny

Barnes (right shoulder impingement) was activated from the DL, and fellow right-handed reliever Joe Biagini was optioned to Buffalo.

■ Rays: Blake Snell was optioned to Durham, and fellow left-hander Jose Alvarado was recalled from the Triple-a club.

Also, infielder Daniel Robertson (neck strain) was activated from the disabled list, and utility player Taylor Featherston was optioned to Durham.

■ Dodgers: Righthanded reliever Dylan

Floro was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs, and outfielder Franklin Gutierrez (ankylosis spondylitis) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

■ Braves: Left-handed reliever Ian Krol (left oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and right-handed reliever Jason Motte (back strain) was activated from the DL.

■ Diamondbacks: Infielder Ketel Marte was activated from bereavement leave, and left-hander Anthony Banda was recalled from Triple-a Reno.

■ Cardinals: Righthander Luke Weaver was optioned to Memphis, and right-handed reliever Sam Tuivailala was recalled from the Triple-a club.

■ Angels: Right-hander Daniel Wright was recalled from Triple-a Salt Lake, and outfielder Ramon Flores was designated for assignment.

■ Brewers: Catcher Andrew Susac was recalled from Colorado Springs; outfielder Lewis Brinson was optioned to the Triple-a club.

■ Astros: Jordan Jankowski was optioned to Fresno, and fellow righthander James Hoyt was recalled from the Triple-a club.

■ Mariners: DH Nelson Cruz (neck spasms) was scratched.

■ Indians: Lefty reliever Craig Breslow signed a minor league contract.
