King Felix out for 3-4 weeks

-

In the midst of the AL wild card chase, the Seattle Mariners will be without starter Felix Hernandez for three to four weeks because of bursitis in his right shoulder.

General manager Jerry Dipoto gave the update on Hernandez on Tuesday.

Hernandez was scratched from his scheduled start last Saturday in Kansas City and placed on the disabled list due to discomfort in his pitching arm. He returned to Seattle and was examined by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan.

Marco Gonzales, acquired in a trade with

St. Louis last month, took Hernandez’s spot in the rotation. Hernandez is 5-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 13 starts this season. Hernandez missed nearly two months earlier this season because of shoulder inflammation.

Indians: Invaluable All-star reliever Andrew Miller may need more time to recover from knee tendinitis.

Miller was placed on the 10-day DL last week with soreness in his right knee that had bothered him for weeks. The elite, late-inning left-hander was having control issues and the Indians felt it was best to shut him down before it worsened.

Miller has been undergoing daily treatment and manager Terry Francona said he could be out longer than expected. He’s eligible to be activated on Aug. 12, when the Indians are in Tampa.

Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw threw aggressively off flat ground but Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said the team will take a cautious approach to the Dodgers’ ace’s return to the rotation.

A bullpen session “in the next few days makes sense,” Roberts said, but probably won’t occur until the team returns to Los Angeles for a weekend series against San Diego.

Kershaw has been sidelined with a back injury since July 23.

Playoff Schedule: The World Series is scheduled to start on Oct. 24 and Game 7 would be on Nov. 1 — spilling into an unusual month for the sixth time.

The playoffs open with the AL wild-card game on Oct. 3, followed by the NL wild-card game the following day. Division Series start Oct. 5, the AL Championship Series on Oct. 13 and the NL Championship Series the next day.

The World Series ended in November in 2001, 2009, 2010, 2015 and last year. The latest a World Series game has been played is Nov. 4, in 2001 and 2009.

Yankees: New York rookie Jordan Montgomery was demoted to the minor leagues in an attempt to limit his innings.

The Yankees acquired Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, and they will remain in the rotation with Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, and CC Sabathia.

Red Sox: Boston activated Dustin Pedroia, who was in the lineup as a designated hitter for Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 33-year-old second baseman was placed on the 10-day DL on August 1 (retroactive to July 29) with left knee inflammation.
