Heart issue stalls Tigers’ Martinez
The Detroit Tigers placed designated hitter Victor Martinez on the 10day disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat, the second time he has landed on the DL this season for the condition.
Manager Brad Ausmus said Martinez, 38, experienced a racing heart after his last at-bat during Saturday’s win over the Chicago White Sox.
Ausmus said Martinez spent the night in a hospital and his heartbeat was regulated. Martinez was expected to be released and travel by car to Detroit, where doctors will try to determine the cause.
Martinez was on the DL fromjune16to28for an irregular heartbeat.
The five-time All-star has batted .255 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIS in 107 games in his 15th season in the majors.
In a corresponding move, outfielder Jacoby Jones was recalled from Triple-a Toledo.
■ Brewers: Minor leaguer Julio Mendez suffered a cardiac event after being hit by a pitch Saturday and is hospitalized in critical but stable condition, the team said.
Mendez, 20, who plays for the Arizona League Brewers, was hit by a pitch thrown by Los Angeles Angels minor leaguer Austin Krzeminski in the ninth inning. The game, which was played in
Tempe, Arizona, was called off after Mendez suffered the cardiac event.
■ Nationals: Infielder Adrian Sanchez is doing well one day after being hit in the chest by a 96-mph pitch, team spokeswoman Amanda Comak said. Sanchez, 27, was sent to a local hospital Saturday for a CT scan.
Also, right-hander A.J. Cole was optioned to Syracuse, and outfielder Rafael Bautista and righthander Erick Fedde, a Las Vegas High and UNLV product, were recalled from the Triple-a club.
■ Reds: Tyler Mahle’s contract was purchased from Louisville, Luke
Farrell was optioned to the Triple-a club, and fellow right-hander Scott Feldman (right knee surgery) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
■ Cubs: Shortstop Addison Russell (plantar fasciitis in right foot) and right-handed reliever Justin Grimm (right index finger infection) will begin rehabilitation assignments Monday with Triple-a
Iowa.
■ Dodgers: Righthander Yu Darvish (tight back) was activated from the disabled list, and righthanded reliever Josh Fields (lower back strain) was placed on the 10-day DL.
■ Cardinals: Third baseman Jedd Gyorko (right hamstring strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and first baseman Luke Voit was recalled from Triple-a Memphis.
■ Astros: Will Harris (right shoulder strain) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow right-handed reliever James Hoyt was optioned to Triple-a Fresno.
■ Phillies: Nick Pivetta was recalled from Lehigh Valley, and fellow righthander Drew Anderson was optioned to the Triple-a club.
■ Blue Jays: Righthander Joe Biagini was recalled from Triple-a Buffalo, and left-hander
T.J. House was designated for assignment.
