Montgomerie claims inaugural Champions Tour event in Japan
Colin Montgomerie made all the putts he needed Sunday on Narita Golf Club’s massive greens to win the Japan Airlines Championship — the first PGA Tour Champions event in Japan.
The 54-year-old Scot two-putted for par from 50 feet on the par-4 18th and tapped in for a 5-under 67 and a one-stroke victory over Billy Mayfair and Scott Mccarron in Chiba, Japan.
European Masters: At Crans-montana, Switzerland, Matthew Fitzpatrick made par on the third extra hole to win after firing a 6-under 64 to force a playoff.
The 48th-ranked Englishman sank his putt from less than 3 feet while Scott Hend of Australia made bogey. It was the fourth career title for the 23-year-old Fitzpatrick.
Walker Cup: The United States won back the Walker Cup from Britain and Ireland on Sunday with decisive performances at Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course.
Collin Morikawa of La Canada Flintridge beat British Amateur champion Harry Ellis 2 and 1 to go 4-0 in the two-day competition. Norman Xiong of Canyon Lake came painfully close to also being perfect before halving his match with Scott Gregory.
UNLV: The No. 12 Rebels men’s team shot a final-round low 13-under 275 to climb four spots and finish fourth at the 19-team, season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Wyoming won the team title by five shots at 29-under 835. UNLV had four players among the top 25 at Eisenhower Golf Course (par 72, 7,511 yards).
Freshman Jack Trent and senior Shintaro Ban fired 6-under 66s. Trent tied for fifth at 7-under 209 in his first collegiate event, recording an eagle on No. 11 along with five birdies and a bogey. Ban carded a bogey-free round with six birdies and tied for 17th at 3-under 213.
Clark County Amateur: Craig Erickson, the 2012 Nevada State Mid-amateur champion, shot a final-round 68 to win the Southern Nevada Golf Association Clark County Amateur at Boulder Creek by two strokes over Alex Jordan, who shot 66.
