Man dies in fall from roof af­ter hours of po­lice talks

Las Ve­gas po­lice ne­go­ti­ated with a man on an apart­ment build­ing roof for sev­eral hours Thurs­day be­fore he fell from the build­ing. He died from the fall, po­lice said.

It was not clear when the man fell, but Metropoli­tan Po­lice De­part­ment Lt. Nate Chio said the man was taken to Sun­rise Hos­pi­tal and Medical Cen­ter.

A call of a pos­si­ble jumper near Flamingo Road and Mary­land Park­way came in at 9:43 a.m., Metro spokesman Jay Rivera said. Po­lice ne­go­ti­ated with the man for sev­eral hours, he said, and gave the man wa­ter.

Rivera said po­lice were go­ing to wait him out, adding Metro had hoped the sun would wear him out and he would come down safely. Ve­gas, ac­cord­ing to the Metropoli­tan Po­lice De­part­ment. The Clark County coroner’s of­fice told Metro on Thurs­day he died from his in­juries.

Sgt. Paul Mccul­lough said Hutchin­son was hit by a white car in the cross­walk of Fort Apache Road and Mariner Cove Drive, near Sa­hara Av­enue.

Po­lice later said the 46-year-old driver ran a red light and hit Hutchin­son. He was hos­pi­tal­ized at Uni­ver­sity Medical Cen­ter in crit­i­cal con­di­tion. The driver re­mained at the scene and co­op­er­ated with au­thor­i­ties, Mccul­lough said. Im­pair­ment wasn’t sus­pected, he said.
