Man dies in fall from roof after hours of police talks

Las Vegas police negotiated with a man on an apartment building roof for several hours Thursday before he fell from the building. He died from the fall, police said.

It was not clear when the man fell, but Metropolit­an Police Department Lt. Nate Chio said the man was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

A call of a possible jumper near Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway came in at 9:43 a.m., Metro spokesman Jay Rivera said. Police negotiated with the man for several hours, he said, and gave the man water.

Rivera said police were going to wait him out, adding Metro had hoped the sun would wear him out and he would come down safely. Vegas, according to the Metropolit­an Police Department. The Clark County coroner’s office told Metro on Thursday he died from his injuries.

Sgt. Paul Mccullough said Hutchinson was hit by a white car in the crosswalk of Fort Apache Road and Mariner Cove Drive, near Sahara Avenue.

Police later said the 46-year-old driver ran a red light and hit Hutchinson. He was hospitaliz­ed at University Medical Center in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authoritie­s, Mccullough said. Impairment wasn’t suspected, he said.
