Dannon cuts ties with Newton for quarterback’s sexist remark

-

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was sacked by one of his sponsors, and his coach said he made a mistake.

Dannon dropped Newton from its Oikos yogurt commercials, where he had been featured since 2015, after he made a sexist remark during Wednesday’s news conference.

When asked a question from Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer, Newton smirked before saying, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

Meanwhile, coach Ron Rivera said Newton didn’t handle the news conference question well. “I think he made a mistake,” Rivera said.

■ Redskins: Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor wrote on social media that he was called a racial slur, prompting him to make an obscene gesture toward the crowd as he exited the field Monday in Kansas City.

■ Chargers: Los Angeles waived rookie kicker Younghoe Koo and replaced him with Nick Novak, 36, who kicked for the Chargers from 2011 to 2014 before spending the past two seasons with Houston.

■ Vikings: Minnesota placed rookie Dalvin Cook (torn ACL) on injured reserve and signed fellow running back Stevan Ridley, 28, who has played six NFL seasons with five teams.

■ Browns: Defensive end Myles Garrett, the top pick in this year’s draft who has been nursing an ankle injury, is expected to make his regular-season debut Sunday.
